Must-Visit Coffee Shops in Charleston
Charleston is one of those cities that immediately pulls you in. Between the cobblestone streets, pastel homes, flower-filled window boxes, and that salty breeze rolling in from the harbor, it’s impossible not to fall a little in love. On my visit, I spent a lot of time wandering—slow walks through historic neighborhoods, browsing the market, and pausing along the waterfront just to take it all in.
What truly surprised me, though, was how vibrant Charleston’s coffee scene is. It’s the perfect mix of Southern warmth and modern, artisanal coffee culture, where each café feels intentional and inviting. I made it my mission to sip my way through the city, using coffee stops as little anchors throughout the day. Some spots felt cozy and rustic, others sleek and design-forward, but every cup was worth lingering over—and each café added its own layer to my Charleston experience.
Second State Coffee
Second State feels calm the moment you walk in. The space is minimalist and bright, filled with natural light, pale wood tables, and a soft, steady hum that makes you want to slow down. I ordered their honey latte, and it was perfectly balanced—just sweet enough without taking away from the espresso. It’s the kind of place that works for everything: reading a few chapters of a book, getting some work done, or lingering over a long conversation with a friend.
Kudu Coffee & Craft Beer
Kudu has a laid-back, effortlessly cool vibe that immediately puts you at ease. Part coffeehouse, part beer garden, it’s refreshingly unplugged—there’s no Wi-Fi, which I actually loved. It keeps the focus on conversation and being present. I had a rich, creamy cappuccino and spent time in their leafy courtyard, which felt like a quiet escape from the busy streets just outside. This is a perfect spot to slow down and soak in Charleston’s relaxed energy.
Mercantile and Mash
Mercantile and Mash is one of those places where you plan to stop for coffee and somehow end up staying much longer. Part gourmet market, part café, the space is industrial-chic with high ceilings, exposed brick, and plenty of room to settle in. I ordered a flat white with a buttery croissant, and both were excellent. It’s a great stop if you love pairing really good coffee with equally good food.
The Daily
Bright, modern, and full of coastal energy, The Daily makes for an ideal breakfast stop. They roast their own beans and offer a menu that blends classic favorites with creative seasonal options. I ordered an iced coffee with their house-made almond milk, and it was smooth, refreshing, and exactly what I needed on a warm Charleston morning. With fresh juices, pastries, and great coffee, it’s an easy place to come back to more than once.
Clerk’s Coffee Company
Stylish, light-filled, and effortlessly Instagrammable, Clerk’s Coffee Company is a lovely place to pause for a moment. They serve Counter Culture Coffee alongside a tempting selection of pastries, making it hard to choose just one thing. I ordered a cortado that was perfectly pulled and grabbed a seat by the large windows, watching the city move by outside. Even though it’s located inside a hotel, it never felt exclusive or closed off. It’s absolutely worth stopping in, whether you’re staying nearby or just wandering through Charleston in need of a really good cup of coffee.
Baba on Cannon
Baba on Cannon blends the feel of a chic European café with Charleston’s easy charm. The space feels refined without ever being stuffy, and the cappuccino I ordered was rich, smooth, and beautifully made. Their breakfast menu is thoughtful and high quality, making this an ideal stop if you want to turn your coffee break into a leisurely meal.
Bad Bunnies Coffee
Playful, colorful, and full of personality, Bad Bunnies instantly puts you in a good mood. The bold artwork on the walls and the creative menu give it a lively, welcoming energy. I ordered an iced caramel latte that was sweet but still nicely balanced, and the barista made me feel like a regular—even though it was my first visit.
Mudhouse Coffee Roasters
Mudhouse is a dream for anyone who really loves coffee. The vibe is modern but warm, and the baristas are genuinely passionate about what they do. I went for a pour-over made with Ethiopian beans, and it was bright, complex, and easily one of the best cups I had in Charleston. This is a spot where the details truly matter.
Sightsee
Part coffee bar, part curated retail space, Sightsee may be small, but it’s full of character. Their seasonal drink menu is especially creative—I tried a rosemary latte that was earthy, fragrant, and completely unforgettable. The space has a friendly, neighborhood feel and makes for the perfect start to a slow, intentional morning.
The Coffee Counter
Cozy and unpretentious, The Coffee Counter feels like a true neighborhood staple. I grabbed a cappuccino and one of their breakfast sandwiches before heading out for the day, and it was exactly what I needed. The service was warm and genuine, and it’s the kind of place that makes you feel like a local right away.
Rise Coffee Bar
Small but mighty, Rise is a chic little stop serving excellent espresso drinks and irresistible baked goods. I ordered a vanilla latte and a glazed doughnut, then took my coffee to go for a walk down King Street. It’s a perfect quick stop when you’re exploring downtown and need a little pick-me-up.
Charleston is the kind of city that invites you to slow your pace and savor the little moments, and its coffee scene fits that rhythm perfectly. Each café I visited offered something different—whether it was a quiet corner to linger, a lively space full of conversation, or a perfectly crafted cup enjoyed on the go. Exploring Charleston one coffee stop at a time ended up being one of my favorite ways to experience the city, weaving together history, creativity, and everyday local life.
If you’re planning a visit, leave room in your itinerary for coffee breaks that turn into memories. Sometimes the best way to understand a place is simply to sit down, take a sip, and let the city unfold around you.
