Must-Visit Coffee Shops in Charleston

Charleston is one of those cities that instantly sweeps you up in its charm—cobblestone streets, pastel houses, flower-filled window boxes, and the salty breeze drifting in from the harbor. But what surprised me most was how vibrant the coffee scene is here. It’s a blend of Southern hospitality and a modern, artisanal coffee culture that makes every café feel like a destination. On my trip, I made it my mission to sip my way through the city, stopping in between historic walks, market browsing, and waterfront views. Each coffee shop had its own character—some cozy and rustic, others sleek and design-focused—but all served coffee worth slowing down for.

Here are the Charleston coffee spots that made my list this trip.

Second State Coffee

Minimalist, bright, and calm, Second State feels like the kind of place where you can truly slow down. The space has plenty of natural light, pale wood tables, and a peaceful hum that makes you want to stay awhile. Their espresso is smooth and balanced, and I loved their honey latte—it was just sweet enough without overpowering the coffee. The kind of spot that’s perfect for reading, working, or catching up with a friend over a lingering cup.

Kudu Coffee & Craft Beer

Kudu is part coffeehouse, part beer garden, and completely relaxed. There’s no Wi-Fi here, which I actually loved—it keeps the focus on conversation and community. The cappuccino I had was rich and creamy, and their leafy courtyard felt like an escape from the busy city streets just outside. If you’re looking for a spot to unwind with a drink and soak in the atmosphere, this is it.

Mercantile and Mash

Part gourmet market, part café, Mercantile and Mash is the kind of place where you might stop for coffee and end up staying for breakfast—or lunch. The industrial-chic space has high ceilings, exposed brick, and plenty of space to spread out. I had a flat white alongside a buttery croissant, and both were excellent. It’s a great stop if you like your coffee with a side of great food options.

The Daily

Bright, modern, and full of coastal energy, The Daily is a perfect breakfast stop. They roast their own beans and offer a menu that mixes classics with creative seasonal specials. I tried an iced coffee with house-made almond milk—it was smooth, refreshing, and exactly what I needed on a warm Charleston morning. They also have fresh juices and pastries, making it a versatile stop for all-day sipping.

Clerk’s Coffee Company

Stylish, light-filled, and very Instagrammable, Clerk’s serves Counter Culture Coffee and pairs it with an excellent pastry selection. I went for a cortado, which was perfectly pulled, and sat by the big windows watching the world go by. Even if you’re not staying at the hotel, it’s worth a stop.

Baba on Cannon

Baba on Cannon blends the feel of a chic European café with Charleston charm. The interiors are sophisticated without feeling stuffy, and the cappuccino I had was rich and velvety. Their breakfast menu features thoughtful, high-quality dishes—perfect if you want to make this more than just a coffee stop.

Bad Bunnies Coffee

Playful, colorful, and full of personality, Bad Bunnies has a lively, welcoming energy. The walls are adorned with bold artwork, and the menu features fun seasonal drinks alongside classics. I had an iced caramel latte that was sweet but still balanced, and the barista made it feel like I was a regular even though it was my first visit.

Mudhouse Coffee Roasters

Mudhouse is a haven for coffee lovers who appreciate detail. The vibe is modern yet warm, with knowledgeable baristas who are happy to guide you through their single-origin offerings. I had a pour-over made with Ethiopian beans—it was bright, complex, and one of the best cups I had in Charleston.

Sightsee

Part coffee bar, part curated retail space, Sightsee is small but full of personality. Their seasonal drink menu is creative—I tried a rosemary latte that was earthy, fragrant, and unforgettable. The space has a friendly, neighborhood feel, making it the perfect spot to start a slow morning before exploring.

The Coffee Counter

Cozy and unpretentious, The Coffee Counter is a neighborhood favorite. I grabbed a cappuccino and one of their breakfast sandwiches before heading out to explore, and it hit the spot. The service was warm and genuine, and it’s the kind of place that makes you feel like a local right away.

Rise Coffee Bar

Small but mighty, Rise is a chic little shop serving excellent espresso drinks and tempting baked goods. I had a vanilla latte and a glazed doughnut, then took my drink for a walk down King Street. It’s a perfect quick stop if you’re exploring downtown and need a pick-me-up.

Charleston’s coffee scene is as inviting as its historic streets—welcoming, full of charm, and brimming with personality. Whether you’re tucked away in a leafy courtyard, sipping in a stylish hotel café, or grabbing something to-go before a stroll along the Battery, there’s a spot here for every coffee mood. If you’re heading to Charleston, keep this list handy and create your own coffee trail. And if you’ve been before and have a favorite I didn’t include, let me know—because I’ll definitely be back.

More coffee trails coming soon—next stop might just be your favorite city.
